LP & 12" EP

little brother releases:

lb-016 Steven R. Smith-Slate Branches LP. $11.00.
Steven R. Smith has been making starkly beautiful music for years, both as a solo artist and as a member of Mirza, Thuja and The Knit Separates. On his fourth solo effort, Slate Branches, Smith lights up the pavements in his own rich tradition of instrumental psychic gesture that is both original and familiar, dissonant and musical. Slate Branches starts off with "Minen Flats" which features gentle bell percussion reminiscent of Harry Partch's Cloud-Chamber Bowls, then moves to the This Heat-inflected "Cities", with its rock drums and accordion. Throughout the rest of the record, Smith utilizes electric and acoustic guitars, bells, violin, keyboards, string percussion, toy piano, and a few other sonic weapons to sculpt a record that is at times uplifting, at times ominous, always engaging.

lb-015 PALO/ONA-Star of the Sea LP. $7.00.
Debut release from the Dunedin, New Zealand band that follows in the fine Xpressway tradition. Star of the Sea is an engaging record which blends well-crafted songs, a la the Renderers, with some more experimental pieces along the lines of the Dead C or Roy Montgomery. Available in a vinyl-only edition of 500, with silk-screened covers.

lb-010 Prick Decay/Jeph Jerman-The Mechanics of Belief LP. $7.00.
Overseas collaboration between the Scottish freaks who run the Chocolate Monk label and the founding member of Blowhole & Hands To. Pretty insane shit. Not for the meek.

lb-006 Nels Cline Trio-Chest 2xLP. $12.00.
Epic record that spans the emotions from menacing to tender to furiously aggro to other worldly. 2xLP is limited to 1000 copies and has a bonus track not on the CD.

lb-003 Our Band Could Be Your Life-A tribute to D Boon and the Minutemen. LP-$7.00.
A bunch of bands (Lou Barlow, T. Moore, Free Kitten, Unwound, Dos, Nels Cline Trio & many more) doing Minutemen tunes plus a D Boon interview and live Minutemen song.

non-little brother stuff:

Alva-Slattery for Ungdom LP (Menlo Park). $11.00.
Second "full-length" (how anyone could release a 16-minute-long record and call it lull-length is beyond me) from a group whose debut release was on John Zorn's Avant label. Juvenile melodies played on violin, piano and other non-rock instruments. Vinyl is limited to 400 copies.

Charlie Parker one-sided EP (Old Gold). $9.00.
Raw, free jazz from an Atlanta group with ties to the Gold Sparkle Band. Limited to 300 copies.

Chic Empowerment Center 12" EP (Volvolo). $7.00.
Loose faux-jazz along the lines of the first Lounge Lizards record. Includes a jazz rendition of "Badges" by the Minutemen. One copy left.

Alex Cline-Not Alone 2xLP (Nine Winds). $12.00.
Solo percussion double LP from Nels' twin brother recorded in April 1981. One copy left.

Crawlspace-The Dark Folds of Infinity Grow Pink with Desire LP (Majora). $10.00.
Another LP from these LA weirdos. At times it's like bizarre chamber music, at others, like the Sun City Girls trying to get funky. One copy left.

Crude-Inner City Guitar Perspectives LP (Flying Nun NZ). $7.50.
A collection of recordings that originally appeared on cassette.

Dislocation-Coyote's Call LP (Fusetron). $8.00.
At times noisy, at times jazzy, this Japanese band doesn't fall neatly into either category.

Duotron-Vs. Tom Smith LP (Menlo Park). $9.00. $7.00. SALE
Guitar, drums and shrieks from these Bulb veterans. Produced by Tom Smith.

Sam Esh & Hard Black Thing-Montezuma Baby Duck LP (Siltbreeze). $7.50.
A completely perplexing LP that begins promisingly with Shadow Ring-type acoustic improv before devolving into the incoherent ramblings of Mr. Esh.

Milo Fine Free Jazz Ensemble-Another Outbreak of Iconoclasm LP (Fusetron). $8.50.
1995 recordings from a free-improv legend. Duets featuring piano/clarinet/drums & guitar.

Dave Fischoff-Winston Park LP (Secretly Canadian). $9.00.
Quiet, delicate record consisting primarily of guitar and voice, but augmented very nicely with found sounds, samples and electronics.

Gang Wizard EP (Blackbean and Placenta). $5.00.
Dense, poorly recorded stuff from this California band. At its best, similar to something from Meat Puppets II; at its worst, it's like an incompetent indie-pop band.

Ist-Anagrams to Avoid LP (SIWA). $10.00.
Improvisations from Simon Fell (double bass), Mark Wastell (cello), and Rhodri Davies (harp). The unusual, percussion-less instrumentation makes this a quiet affair. A very subtle, rewarding record.

Simon Joyner-Tomorrow Yesterday and In Between 2xLP (Sing, Eunuchs!). $14.00.
Simon Joyner is still probably best known for his split 7" with the Mountain Goats, but he has released a number of full-lengths on his own. Echoes of Bob Dylan and Palace are apparent, without ever making the music derivative. Impressive.

Kaia LP (Candy Ass/Chainsaw). $7.50.
Ex-Team Dresch and Adickdid. Her first solo LP and first solo release after the long out-of-print little brother 7". Of course it's great.

Magic User-Color 12" EP (Magnetic Canvas). $6.00.
Detuned guitar, noise, and found sounds create a low-key, appealing, droning debut from this artist and label. Certainly recommended for those who like the sounds of No Neck, Climax Golden, etc. Edition of 500.

Meringue-Music from the Mint Green Nest 2xLP (Cherry Smash). $12.50.
Second full-length from this Florida group that was profiled in a recent issue of Bananafish. At times similar to (early) Polvo if they listened to a lot of Beefheart and were more prone to longer instrumental passages.

Mink Shoals/Squirrelly Drawling split LP (Berlap). $8.00. $6.50. SALE
Mink Shoals features acoustic slide guitar instrumentals that show a strong John Fahey influence, while never imitating. Should certainly appeal to any Fahey fan. Quite excellent. Squirrelly Drawling leans toward more standard lo-fi rock with some weirdness thrown in.

Noggin EP (Blackbean and Placenta). $7.00.
Live one-sided EP recorded July 1995 in Minneapolis.

No. 1 Lowest Common Denominator-The S.S. Sessions LP (Philthy Rex). $8.00.
From rambling rock tunes to proto-punk to drugged-out instros, this record consistently rewards. Ed. of 300.

Wayne Peet-Down-In/Ness LP (Nine Winds). $6.50.
Solo piano improvisations recorded in September 1981. One copy left.

pHoaming Edison-Sold to the Highest Grady LP (Dark Beloved Cloud). $6.75.
Short, disjointed four-track songs. Like a more fucked-up, less classic-rock-dameged Guided By Voices. I hope the title is a Sanford and Son reference. One copy left.

Leslie Q-Into Handicapped LP (Menlo Park). $10.00.
Lured away from Majora for her third full-length, Leslie continues her warped brand of personal little non-songs. This album is even less focused than the Majora records (not necessarily a bad thing) and has some nicely silk-screened/letter-pressed covers.

The Rue Morgue Jug Band-Live 10/13/96 one-sided LP (El Boracho). $8.00.
Instrumental jam/improvisation stuff from Albany, NY. Paste-on covers, edition of 200, yatta yatta yatta.

Sonic Youth-Anagrama 12" EP (SYR). $8.00.
First in a series of instrumental self-released EPs from Kim, Thurston, Lee & Steve. Undoubtedly too experimental for Geffen, these records represent the high point of Sonic Youth's recent output. They're supposedly limited, but I'm not sure to how many.

Sonic Youth & Jim O'Rourke-Invito Al Cielo LP (SYR). $8.00.
Third EP from the band featuring ex-members of the Coachmen, Crucifucks, etc., hooking up with that guy who produced a Wilco record.

Sonic Youth-Slaapkamers Met Slagroom 12" EP (SYR). $8.00.
Volume two of their limited (mostly) instrumental EPs.

Sonic Youth-A Thousand Leaves 2xLP (My So-Called Records). $12.00.
The vinyl version of the 1998 DGC mega-release. Not as "out" as the recent SYR EPs, but certainly more abstract than the other DGC records.

Space Dust-First to the Future LP (Carburetor). $9.00.
First full-length from this Christchurch, NZ group.

Splotch-Have Another Tantrum LP (Menlo Park). $8.00.
Lo-fi noise-rock from a band that sounds like they would be at home on the Blackjack label.

Surface of the Earth-Interference LP (Fusetron). $8.00.
After a 7" on Fusetron and a number of ultra-limited releases, this is the first domestic full-length from this New Zealand group that specializes in minimal pulsing drones. Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing it's limited.

Tono Bungay-Rough Music LP (Twisted Village). $9.00.
First LP from one of the better improv-rock bands around. Features Robert Dennis and Bob Bannister (both from Fire in the Kitchen). One copy left.

V/A-B.B.P.T.C.'s Coffee Shop EP (Blackbean and Placenta). $5.00.
Tracks from Azusa Plane, Two Dollar Guitar, Overpass, Yak Brigade, Babyland, and others.

V/A-Nailed to the Stars LP (Jealous Butcher). $7.00.
Mid-‘90s comp. of (mostly) Eugene bands. Highlights include Bossanova 2600 and Kpants. Also includes early recordings from Kind of Like Spitting.

Village of Savoonga-Score LP (Kollaps/Hausmusik GER). $11.00.
Third LP from the pride of Weilheim. This one continues their progression toward more instrumental, darker sounds, but it's more focused than the Philipp Schatz record.

Nels Cline Trio-"Hold It Under a Faucet" 7" (Ecstatic Peace/Father Yod). $4.00.
Final release from the now-defunct and much-lamented Trio (long live the Nels Cline Singers!). This single was recorded in July of 1995, but wasn't released until nearly seven years later, and these tracks are not available in any other format. Still, the stuff is top-notch, with "Hold It Under a Faucet" ranking as one of the best rockin' Trio songs. Side two consists of four "micro-improvs" known collectively as "Snak Systems". All in all, a fine release from an awesome group, and it won't disappoint anyone familiar with Nels' mighty discography.

Closed 3rd Eye 7" (Stomach Ache MEX). $4.00.
Straight ahead punk-rawk. Not bad, but a little out of place on Stomach Ache.

Cloudboy-Pet 7" (Flying Nun NZ). $3.50. $2.50. SALE

Constant Pain-"Shadow of a Lonely Man" 7" (Carburetor). $3.50.
Despite the lame name, this is actually a pretty cool band, made up of members from the fine New Zealand noise rock band Sferic Experiment.

Crawling With Tarts-Motorini Elettrici 2x7" (gyttja). $8.50.
A 17-min compostion created by placing small motors and contact mics on non-musical objects. Quite good and surprisingly listenable.
